Excerpt from Uncle Sam’s Trails and Triumphs: With Old Glory
A change was desired and from a pencil sketch pre pared by Gen. Washington the continental congress on June 14, 1777, adopted a resolution that the flag of the thirteen states shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, and the Union be thirteen stars in a blue field.
Thus originated a new Nation’s new flag, different from all others in glorious beauty and construction. It has a grand historical existence of a little over a cen tury. It has done wonders in the enlightenment of a people’s liberty. It isa flag that means more than all others. The blue field is the accepted color of fidelity and liberty, and placed in that part of the flag that is significant of the chosen emblem of a Nation.
