The reader might scarce credit me, were I to tell him of how much vigilant Observation and laborious thought these few pages were the fruit. Day after day, and week after week, through several succes sive years, I kept careful watch, jotting down diurnally the results of my scrutiny, and testing them again and again, till, at last, I trust I have succeeded in presenting them in a shape so Simple and lucid that to read will be to understand.
