Brotherton Hall had been some years in chan cery at the time our story commences. The sole representatives of the Brotherton family were, now, Mrs. Judith Brotherton and her grand daughter Sybil. That dear Old lady was a character Heaven bless her I fear I shall caricature the portrait in trying to portray her excellent, but somewhat complex nature. Just as when I was a little girl, and would have some beautiful ideal face haunting my imagination, and, taking a pencil to draw it, would produce some hideous monstrosity, and throw away pencil and sketch in disgust.
