Most cheerfully I concede to Mr. George Ade all credit as the originator of the Modern Fable, but I plead not guilty to any charge of unconscious assimilation, for the pencil sketches in this volume are from a little individual world whose inner work ings are far removed from the ordinary walks of life. The intricate human machinery of the hotel business has fashioned a community of its own and, as such, evolves many a character and many a situa tion unique unto its environments.
