The purest varieties of graphite are used in the manufacture of pencils and as lubricants; the crystalline (ceylon, Passau, Scandinavia) for crucibles, stove blacking, paints, and foundry facings. Artificial graphite now enters into competition with the natural product. The manufacture of artificial graphite, started at Niagara Falls a few years ago, continues to increase in importance, In 1901 there were made tons, valued at 2 a ton. Half this output was used for the manufacture of electrodes.
