The fketches are thirty-nine In number, the perfonages, whofe lives are given, were all of them of’confiderable, and many of’ the highel’c celebrity. Their portraits form a part of the fuperb collection at Knole. By whom they were all painted is unknown, fome of them certainly by Holbein, and mof’c of them, probably, by his pupils. A room near ninety feet in length, is appropriated to them, and to the great attention of the noble proprietor is to be afcribed their being in perfect prefervation. The finef’t produc tions of Titian, Corregio, Vandyck, and Rembrandt, and particularly the mof’t bril liant efforts of Sir jofhua Reynolds’s pencil, form the greater part of the ref’c of the.
