Excerpt from Antarctica
Nevertheless, it is impossible that this work Should be complete or more than approximately accurate. The records of the Antarctic are lamentably imper feet, except in the case of the few national expedi tions and of one or two of the sealing voyages. Of some of the latter only brief notes were published;of others, accounts possibly remain in the shape of log books still in manuscript; while of others, doubt less all trace has disappeared. Then again the rarer books and documents are not found in any one Spot. This prevents in many cases verifying the quotations and data, jotted down in pencil from the originals in various libraries, by referring anew to the origi nals, and a certain number of errors due to mistakes in transcription are therefore unavoidable. It is hoped, however, that this book is a step towards clearing up the story of the Antarctic, and especially that it may incite other geographers to make further researches into the original records.
