Excerpt from A Romance of Dijon
AS yet day halted on the threshold of the beautiful wine country; pencilled in grey the twin eminences over against its capital. Like yet different are those nodding hamlets, Fontaine, birthplace of St. Bernard, Talant, historic also, each crowned by church, chateau, and clustering cottages at their feet, the proud city of Charles the Bold; beyond, rising with gentle curve, the golden Hills Vineyards famous throughout Christendom. In the lumin ous eastern belt of starry twilight, Dijon had almost an ethereal look, as if a brisk wind might disperse that picture in cloudland, slate-coloured silhouette against a 7gradually clearing Sky.
