In general, it has been the object of the editor simply to explain the meaning of such terms, and, when they refer to ecclesiastical vestments and furniture, to describe very briefly the uses Of the Object. But in those cases in which the term 01 the thing has an important relation to modern church questions, it is more fully considered. Thus, under the the reader will find a history of the altar from the patriarchal age to the present time, with its various forms, from the Druidical cromlech to the modern Roman Catholic altar, illustrated by the pencil of the artist.
